So-Eun Yoon/A memorable experience/ Tuesdays 34

                                               A High School Love Affair

So-Eun Yoon

Life in high school was very stressful. In order to provide me with the best opportunities of higher education, my parents suggested that I try out for a foreign language high school. These specialized schools were originally created to nurture talented students in foreign languages, but honestly, they were just full of students yearning for the easiest ways to get into a high-ranking college. My initial impression of a foreign language high school was a collection of nerds who did nothing but study, but just like any ordinary high school, it was full of gossips and drama. Out of all the hilarious events that happened in high school, I have one episode I will probably never forget.

It all started on a hot summer day four years ago. My friends and I had just finished eating our lunch and were heading out of the school cafeteria. I had four close friends in high school who were all in the same class, but I had one friend who was especially close to me. Hae-Kyung was an extraordinary girl with peculiar interests. She was obsessed with hardcore metal music and had piercings all over her face, but surprisingly had the best grades in our school. Nobody could say anything about her distinctive looks that drew attention everywhere because her grades left no room for criticism. What I especially loved about her was her confidence. She was never afraid of expressing her thoughts and feelings and was always open and honest. That day after lunch, she announced to our friends that she had a big crush on a boy who was playing for our school's basketball team. She took us out to the basketball court where several guys were practicing shooting and pointed her finger at him. To my surprise, he was someone I already knew well, a guy from my Chinese class whom I always used to sit with. Although I was good friends with him, I pretended not to know him because I didn't want to set him up with Hae-Kyung. I was interested in the guy myself. Later on, I went to watch movies with him and secretly started dating him, but Hae-Kyung found out about this and got furious. She called me a traitor and avoided talking to me for the rest of the year. She eventually forgave me and we became friends again, but I did not end up so well with my boyfriend. I guess it was a price I had to pay for breaking my best friend's heart.

Even though high school was full of drama and had always given me a hard time, it was also full of good memories I will never forget. I am now good friends with Hae-Kyung and we laugh about this episode every time we reminisce about the old days. It remains one of the most humiliating memories of my life but is also remembered as one of the funniest episodes from my teenage years.

  1. It is an interesting story! I have a similar experience when I was in high school where two girls crushing on one guy at the same time. I can understand how the complicated relationship could form. In my case, I decided to stay with my best friend because I thought friendship was more important and would last longer. I think you could talk about how you decided to go out with him, leaving your best friend.

    1. I like this writing because it's very simple and relate-able since we've all had this kind of experience in high school.
    2. Your main point seems to be that you humiliated yourself for putting your desires first and maybe making your friend jealous, but I think you did the right thing. Ha.
    3. I pretended not to know him / secretly started dating him : These show that your wanted him more than your friend, so you decided to act before she did. Secretly. So your desire to date him was far more than to keep a friendship.
    4. Everything was clear because it's a very simple story.
    5. I think you could have added more details to make this story even more fun. Great job!

  3. a. One detail that made your experience seem real to me was that you mentioned your friend's name "Hae-kyung" in your essay.

    b. There was no place I got confused while reading your story.

    c. First paragraph was pretty exciting to draw attention because it reminded me of my life in high school. But 'introduing your friend Hae-kyung' in the first paragraph would have been another good way to start your essay :)

    d. I think verb tenses are correct so your essay doesn't need any correction on verb tenses.

    e. I'd like to know more specifically about how you and Hae-kyung became friends again. Your friend called you a traitor but eventually she forgave you in the end. I want to know more detailed episode :)

I want to ask him out,” said Hae-Kyung in an excited voice. To my surprise, he was someone I already knew well, a guy from my Chinese class whom I always used to sit with.

Although I was good friends with him, I pretended not to know him because I didn’t want to set him up with Hae-Kyung. I was interested in the guy myself. Later on, I went to watch movies with him and secretly started dating him, but Hae-Kyung found out about this and got furious. “You liar! Don’t even think about talking to me again!” She called me a traitor and avoided talking to me for the rest of the year. When we became seniors in high school, I wrote her a sincere letter of apology asking for her forgiveness, and she eventually decided to forgive me and we became friends again. What’s funny is that when I finally earned my best friend back, I ended up breaking up with my boyfriend that same month. Now that I think about it, it was a price I had to pay for breaking my best friend’s heart. It’s sad but it taught me that in life, you win some and you lose some.

Even though high school was full of drama and had always given me a hard time, it was also full of good memories I will never forget. I am now good friends with Hae-Kyung and we laugh about this episode every time we reminisce about the old days.
